If I could give you one simple thing to do that would go a long way toward helping turn our country around, would you do it? Well, as your New Year’s resolution for 2015, I have an assignment for you that will make a huge difference in our country. And if you’re not into resolutions, please take this one on anyway!
Founding Father John Jay gave us a simple six-step formula that would preserve our freedom:
“Every member of the State ought diligently to read and to study the constitution of his country, and teach the rising generation to be free. By knowing their rights, they will sooner perceive when they are violated, and be the better prepared to defend and assert them.”
That’s it! That’s how we take our country back:
- Read our founding documents
- Study our founding documents
- Teach our founding documents to the next generation
- Perceive when our rights are violated
- Defend those rights with everything we’ve got
- Assert and live our freedoms
You can’t fight for and defend what you don’t know you have! That is why it’s so crucial to return to studying the founding documents in our schools. This is what “Celebrate Freedom Week” is all about.
When I was serving in the Texas legislature, I came across a poll that talked about how little Texans knew about the First Amendment. I was shocked…and then realized that I could not name the five freedoms in that Amendment myself.
As a result, we established “Celebrate Freedom Week” in Texas. By law, every Texas public school student must spend time each year during “Celebrate Freedom Week” studying the Declaration and the Constitution and even reciting those critical 56 words from the Declaration that sum up the American philosophy of freedom.
This is legislation we need to get into every state! So far, at least four other states have passed it (Oklahoma, Arkansas, Kansas, and Florida) and a couple of other states are considering it.
On the Celebrate Freedom Week page on my website, we have an interactive map showing the status of the legislation in all 50 states, as well as sample Celebrate Freedom Week legislation and what you can do to help this bill pass in your state.
If we want to pass the torch of freedom on to the rising generation, we MUST start teaching these principles of American Exceptionalism embodied in the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution in the public schools.
This is one of the the best New Year’s resolutions you can make!
